Style Chat: Little Miss Songbird

The Little Miss Songbird Kimono & Cardi is an easy fit, outerwear garment for your mini fashionistas, whether they be little princesses or style savvy teens. Size 3-14.

The Little Miss Songbird sewing pattern is designed for both wovens & knits. It’s versatility will have you creating sun cover-ups, winter warmers, special occasion pieces or every day wear, with an option to suit all seasons & lifestyles.

CROPPED KIMONO

The cropped kimono comes to just below the waist, can be made with any of the sleeves & features a full length band.   

Teamed with denim & a white tee: cropped really is such a fabulous new way to wear a kimono.

And no, brocade isn't in the list of suggested fabrics but my testing team are adventurous & Shelley decided to give it a go anyway. It turned out brilliantly. 

HIPSTER KIMONO

The versatile hipster kimono reaches the hip, as you'd expect.  With this one, you can choose between a short (cropped) or a full length band.

This length is so versatile in such a wide range of fabrics. Tie it at the front for a great updated look.

KNEE LENGTH KIMONO

The knee length kimono reaches mid thigh. Sew one for Winter in a snuggly warm knit, or for Summer in a light airy rayon.  

You can add pockets to the knee length kimono!!!

As with the hipster length, you can use the short (cropped) or full length band. You can add any of the sleeves options or add trim to the hem.

LONGLINE KIMONO

The longline kimono looks adorable on the littlies & chic on the teens.

Reaching mid calf, you can use the short (cropped) or full length band. You can add any of the sleeves options or add trim to the hem.

Plus, you can also add pockets to the longline kimono!!!

THE BAND

The Girls Songbird neckline is finished with a narrow band. You can choose the Short (cropped) Band like the Ladies Songbird which finished just up from the hem or the Full Length Band that aligns neatly with the hem.

Both bands are fabulous, it really just depends on your personal preference. The exception is the Cropped Kimono. You must use the full length band on this one. 

If you're going to be adding trim to the hemline, choose the Short (cropped) band so you avoid using any colourful, but often helpful, words.

TAPERED SLEEVES

Add either the short or long tapered sleeve. 

FLARED SLEEVE

Choose from the very flared short sleeve or the semi flared 1/2 sleeve. 

SHORT FLARED SLEEVE

1/2 SEMI-FLARED SLEEVE

ADD A FLOUNCE TO THE SLEEVE

If you've been wandering around the stores or looking in magazines, you'll have seen that flounces are gorgeously everywhere right now.

You can add a very pretty & on-trend flounce to either the short tapered sleeve or the 1/2 flared sleeve. 

POCKETS!!

Yes pockets! absolutely deserves an exclamation mark. It's a very rare Pattern Emporium pattern that is without pockets. 

Lots of treasures can be stored in these pockets. Or lip gloss or those extra hair bands we learn to carry around from a young age in case we need to climb a tree or a mountain or read a good book outside. 

These pockets are sewn into the side seams and are pretty much hidden from the outside. You can add pockets to the Knee Length & the Longline Songbirds. 

CUFFS

When I told Mel I was going to make a girls Songbird the first thing she requested was cuffs. This little gem of a feature was added for totally practical reasons - to keep sleeves out of food! 

You can add a cuff to the Long Tapered Sleeve. And whether your Kimono is made out of woven or knit fabric, you add a knit cuff. 

LACE TRIM:

When the perfect fabric meets the lace trim you've been hoarding and you get a match made in heaven. 

BUTTON OR SNAP FRONT

There's a little pattern hack right at the end of the tutorial that shows you how & where to add a snap or button/buttonhole.
